Reviews for Journals

Expertise & References

I have managed project portfolios and large projects (among others I was in charge of the industrial competence network Softnet Austria and the competence center for excellent technologies COMET Softnet II) as well as various IT-related projects (interim management tasks such as re-structuring development- and verification teams as well as technical due diligence for transferring patents or equity). With over 15 years of professional experience, I look forward to share my insights with you (a full list of projects and talks is provided upon request).

Talks & Impulse Statements

In various projects I have experienced that the production of software-intensive products takes place according to different rules than those of industrial goods. We thus have to rethink work organization. Such impetus for a new work culture has emerged in the software engineering field but today comes from many sides: Global competition calls for a networked collaboration across time and cultural boundaries and the pressure to innovate calls for automation to implement fast feedback cycles among the stakeholders. In such a setting, the development a software-intensive product brings to light several questions:

  • Your mission is clear, your vision is evident and your strategy is ready?
  • Your key performance indicators support your strategic goals and provide you with valid data to reliably govern your company?
  • Your quality management system provides you with information about the quality of your product and its continuous improvement?
  • Your R&D resources are spent on differentiating functionality rather than on commodity functionality - things that no customer will use as an argument to buy your solution rather than one of your competitor?
Congratulations - I probably can't do anything for you! But you can do something for me: get in touch with me, you can serve as a benchmark for other companies.

Project- and Interim-Management

Few projects fail because of the technology. More often than not, an inexperienced project manager does not succeed in promptly questioning the expectations of all stakeholders involved and in establishing a realistic consensus among all project participants at an early stage.

The safest way to a successful project is through a project manager who can understand and balance the expectations of all stakeholders, who can form and motivate a suitable team, who can negotiate change requests fairly without hardened fronts and who acts with foresight and can anticipate imminent hazards in good time.

Do you feel addressed on some points? - Then pls. do not hesitate to ask for references and get it touch with me.

Research

Software Quality Engineering & Testing

Software is integrated more frequently into every aspect of our lives, its size doubles approximately every 5 to 10 years, and its failure in operations causes increasingly devastating consequences. Schedules and budgets are continually reduced despite the need for continuous quality. Software development has advanced from an art to an engineering discipline - a discipline that is very much impacted by human, domain, and organizational factors. In my research I am exploring the spectrum from process improvement to evidence-based techniques for testing, verification and validation.

Fault Isolation & Diagnosis

One major origin of the complexity of software-enabled systems (e.g., functionally complex but energy-efficient firmware) lies in the required complex interaction with its context - an often uncontrolled and dynamically changing environment. This context can be established by (groups of) users, an organized work process, other software systems, and engineered physical systems. In my research I am exploring techniques that aid in reducing and mastering today's system complexity, such as the application of model-based diagnosis and test automation to detect and isolate faults in software-enabled systems.

Software Engineering for Electronic-based Systems

In (intelligent) electronic-based systems (e.g., systems exhibiting anticipatory behavior) one has to adress two types of failures: Systematic (software) failures are mistakes or oversights in the design that are primarily a result of human error somewhere along the development process. By contrast, random (hardware) failures are failures that occur unpredictably during the lifecycle of the hardware. Whereas the engineering of electronic-based systems puts more emphasizes on random faults, software engineering typically focuses on detection of systematic faults. In my research I explore how to cope with both types of failures in the presence of quality attributes such as high availability and reliability of safety-relevant functions.

Teaching

Lectures

Iam offering seminars covering state-of-the practice topics in software engineering and quality assurance such as tools for software engineering, test process improvement, test automation and continuous software engineering. The topics are motivated by over 10 years of collaborative and ongoing work with a number of companies. Topics are primarily of interest for students of computer science, software engineering and management, as well as information and computer engineering. The working language is English. In the summer term, the seminar on tools in software technology (in german: Softwaretechnolige Tools) is broadcasted to the Alpen-Adria Universität Klagenfurt. Students thus have access to an extended portfolio of topics at Graz University of Technology as well as the Alpen-Adria Universität. In the academic year 2017/18 students may choose from a this list of lectures.

Thesis

Ioffer numerous topics for bachelor, master and PhD theses in my areas of research. The topics range from conceptual to empirically motivated topics both in a methodical but also in an empirical context mostly in collaboration with companies. Please find a list of running and finished thesis I have supervised / co-supervised. For sure, I am open to your own topic proposals as long as these are within my areas of expertise. Do not hesitate to get in touch with me, it is a pleasure for me to provide further information.

Expert Exchange

In areas where the pace of the development is very fast, such as in lean product development, or in the field of scalable web architectures for the modern enterprise, a moderated exchange of experience at the expert level fosters the learning from and with each other. Therefore I am offering moderated exchange circles under the framework of the Value-Network Süd - IT-enabled eco-systems qualification network.
